Summer Skiing & Snowboarding
If visiting the mountains is all about skiing for you, don’t let the summer stop you! Tignes is nicely placed below the Grande Motte glacier – France’s highest ski-able glacier making it possible to ski and snowboard at high altitude (3550m).
The Glacier in Tignes is will be open for skiing for part of the summer depending on suitability of glacier conditions. Pistes will be closed during August.
Le Grande Motte Glacier Summer Ski Area
At an altitude of 3000m the summer ski area awaits you. Six ski lifts open up 20km of pistes, a 750m vertical drop and one of the most impressive snow parks in Europe. The snow park (750m by 250m) is a fantastic place for freestylers – and with graded jumps it’s not only for the pros! The glacier in summer is a top playground for real snow sports enthusiasts.
Whether you’re a novice keen to give skiing or snowboarding a try, or a more experienced rider wanting to improve your skills, we can help to arrange ski or snowboard lessons during summer opening times.
We recommend the following Ski & Snowboard Schools:
Chalet Hotel Les Melezes provides in-house ski hire. We have a full range of skis and snowboards for any ability. We can even lend you clothing so need to pack your ski kit for a summer holiday.
The glacier is open all summer for pedestirans. Admire the impressive views of the glacier and surrounding peaks (Grande Casse, Grande Sassiere, Mont Pourri and the Mont Blanc range), soak up the sunshine or enjoy lunch in the Panoramic restaurant.
Fresh snow often falls on the Glacier over the course of the summer keeping the snow levels nicely topped up. Powder days on the glacier have been known even in July and August! The mornings usually begin with hard snow after the cold temperatures at altitude during the night. Conditions remain in good shape, gradually softening throughout the morning and the ski area closes around 2pm.
